Women of the ELCA

Ellen Miller_0698The mission of the WELCA is to mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ.

As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the women of the ELCA commit themselves to grow in faith, affirm their gifts, support each another in their callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

The Martha Circle meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the church parlor.  All women of the church are welcome.

The Circle provides outreach in the community and financial support of area ministries in addition to providing support for the program of the church.  The Martha Circle’s recent activities include:

  • Assembly over fifty “pillowcase dresses” as part of a Virginia Synod WELCA program, “Little Dresses for African Girls”
  • Participation in the Fellowship of the Least Coin, a worldwide ecumenical movement of prayer for peace and reconciliation. Participants spend time in prayer, upholding others who are victims of jealousy, hatred, violence, and injustice.  With each prayer, a participant sets aside a “least coin” of her currency as a tangible token of her prayer.   These offerings are sent to Church Women United, an inclusive, ecumenical women’s movement.
  • Collection of personal care hygiene kits for clients of Bristol Faith in Action
  • Donation of needed household items for Abuse Alternatives, Inc. of Bristol.
  • Provision of financial support for the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry, Bristol Faith in Action, Abuse Alternatives, the American Cancer Society, Healing Hands Health Center, and the Virginia Synod.
  • Recognition of Redeemer’s high school and college graduates
  • Fellowship at monthly meetings and at the annual “Tasting Tea”
  • Visitation and ministry to homebound parishioners
